Since I first started my interior design and furniture blog at the end of 2009,I have noticed that the most popular posts have been related to ADA requirements; but especially to ADA requirements as it relates to reception areas.

So since that seems to be what you are looking for, I pulled some additional pictures of some of my favorite manufacturers that I think do well in the area of ADA reception desks. I think you will agree that function and ADA compliance can come together in these reception desks without compromising design style. I might add that these manufacturers are also surprisingly affordable.

Featured below are ADA reception desk creations by:

As I am doing my planning of new office spaces, one of the things I have always dreaded was the conference room. Now this is not because I do not like laying out the space and making it functional and attractive, but rather the reaction from the client when I tell them how much it is going to cost for their meeting space.

In the past you have had roughly two choices-

1. Cheap laminate or wood conferencing solutions with limited technology and sizes limiting your functionality

OR

2. Expensive wood furniture costing thousands of dollars for a small space.

So you can understand my excitement when Mayline came out with their Real Office line and their extensive line of meeting and conference tables.

I remember the first time I was trying to find a small wood conference table for a private office. I only had $300.00 to spend. Yikes, that did not leave me with many options or at least not any that I would want to sell. I came across the Corsica small round wood veneer table from Mayline for $279.00 at the time for a 42″ Rd wood veneer table. I actually called the factory to see if it was a typo. I couldn’t believe that this wood veneer table could be so reasonable. I ordered the table and have ordered many since then. It is beautiful, functional and priced right.

Since then Mayline has really stepped up and added some beautiful additions to their line. You can check out their conference and meeting table brochures below. This highlights only some of their options.

Conference Brochure

Training and Meeting Table Brochure

A Few of the Reasons to Check out Mayline Conference and Training Tables

1. All styles from Contemporary, Transitional to Traditional.

2. Laminate and Wood options available

3. Various ways to handle the technology of today in a tasteful manner.

Training table power options

Conference table power options

4. For training and meeting High Pressure Laminate tables you can choose from any standard Wilson Art, Nevamar standard laminates at NO UPCHARGE and NO MINIMUM QUANTITY. Making this an excellent design choice.

5. Various sizing capibility. Some lines up to a 30′ wood stylish conference table within 3-6 week turn around. This is un heard of.

6. Most items are in stock or easily delivered to you within a 3-6 week period.

7. Companion pieces such as lecturns, presentation boards and buffets available for most lines.

8. Seating that is compatable and affordable, yet offering an edge in forward thinking design.

9. Nesting capabilities and reconfigurability for many models. I love the Napoli Nesting table and the Flip and Go Training tables.

10. Most all of the lines in Real Office by Mayline come with a whole family of offerings. This allows you to outfit the reception, conference and office spaces with a consistant designer look.

Below is the Napoli Real Office Family of products from Boardroom to Reception giving you the idea behind the full family of products concept.

Napoli Family of Furniture by Mayline

If that isn’t enough to entice you to browse, consider a couple of more things.

Mayline offers White Glove Installation Services that is second to none. This is wonderful when you are a company that is national and or your local dealer can not service those areas. The Mayline crews are professional and consistant.

Finally, the customer service department is just plain fabulous. They take my calls with care and concern and have always delivered on all levels above and beyond what is expected.I can not say enough good things about this company and their lines. Mayline is a full service manufacturing company. In addition to office and conferencing solutions they can do complete projects including high density filing, mail-rooms and server rooms. Their offerings are extensive.

So next time you are in the need of conferencing and meeting spaces know there are options that are both stylish and affordable.

Lately I have been pricing out a good amount of call centers and systems furniture spaces. It has been interesting to see how the market is playing out. Companies have held out as long as they can to invest in growth and furniture and have now come to terms with needing to move forward with furniture purchases so they can continue to grow.

That said they want it all.

The systems furniture needs to be adaptable, aesthetically pleasing but most of all affordable. That can be hard to find if you don’t know where to look. However, lucky for me and my readers I have a PERFECT solution.

One of my favorite products since I have been introduced to it about 3 years ago, is Interworks EQ by Kimball Office. This product has been around for decades and continues to offer a strong presence in the market place. But don’t let the longevity fool you. The product has been updated to accommodate new technology, growth and expansion, and designers eyes.

So why is this product one of my favorite solutions. It really can deliver on all fronts. Check out how below.

Interworks EQ has adapted to the changing work environment, while offering a variety of aesthetic and affordable solutions.

Electrical and Technology perks- With the exception of the full glass panel, the panels can house base or mid electrical and data. A great added benefit to the panel is its immense space allotment in the top channel for high tech data requirements.

The 4 circuit 8 wire system can be configured to a 3-1 -3 hot – on separate ground and neutral with a single hot with a dedicated isolated ground and neutral for computer protection. Or, you can also configure a 2-2 configuration with 2 hots sharing one ground and neutral and the other 2 sharing the other ground and neutral. Check with your electrician and furniture supplier on the building supply to determine your options. The electrical components are installed with a simple snap in assembly and jumpers between panels to reduce install time. The solutions are simple but effective.

Universal Hinge connector- Having a universal connector makes change and reconfiguration much simpler. The hinge connector allows for versatile arrangements in L, T, X or 120* configurations. This can create a world of adaptability some other systems just don’t offer without a great deal of hassle.

Reduced cost of Installation- In addition to the snap in electrical and the universal hinge, Interworks EQ panels come with top cap, wire-way panel, hinges and glides and carpet grippers ready on each panel. So the installer is not wasting time searching for components to install.

Another great added benefit is the specification tools. As a Designer this proves to be invaluable. Kimball Office Interworks EQ has programs with Auto-Cad, 2020 Imagine, Giza as well as other manufacturers software. Auto hardware is available on many of the software programs and changing from configuration to configuration is a breeze with the specifying tools. This saves money and time and insures a good order and install the first time around. This I know from experience!

Varying heights and width or panels and components-

Monolithic Panels- Full fabric tack-able acoustical panels are the most affordable configuration and offer the widest range of possibilities. You are able to create reception systems areas all the way to management areas.

Widths- 18″,24″,30″,36″,42″,48″,60″

Heights- 34″,42″,48″,54″,62″,66″,80″

Full Glass Panels- Want a full glass look, well Interworks EQ has it. Heights available at 62″,66″ and 80″H. Widths are available in 24″,30″ or 36″

Sectional Panels- This offers style, individuality and functionality. You are able to keep private areas private and other areas visible where needed. With the combination of fabric , glass( both clear and frosted) and metal sections you can create a unique look that is functional and aesthetically pleasing. You can attach the sectional panels to the monolithic panels and use only where needed to save on expense while still delivering the results you need and want.

Sectional panels come in the same heights as the monolithic panels and same widths up to 48″.

With the exception of the glass sections you can even specify different fabrics and looks on each side. This gives you even more versatility and design options.

Stack-able Panel Sections- The ultimate in versatility. Want short panels now but you may need to add sections later to create more private environments. You want to be able to adjust to different work environments as times change. You may want to consider Interworks EQ and the stack-able solution. You don’t have to worry if you need to add privacy later, because you can!

Stack-able sections are fabric or glass and come in 12″,14″ or 18″ H. The widths match all panels sizes of both the sectional and monolithic panels. You can stack up to 2 stacking sections high up to 32″ H not to exceed 80″H or 66″H depending on original configuration.

Privacy Panels and Hinged doors- This is one of my favorite options on the Interworks EQ system. The privacy panel can offer just enough of the private office without the added expense. The privacy panels can come in all fabric, translucent glass, or fabric/marker board combination. You can see in the gallery below how I used the privacy panel on a job I installed. A more traditional hinged door is available for the 80″H systems office areas.

Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz offer The Power of Full Engagement to demonstrate that managing energy, not time, is the key to becoming physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused, and spiritually aligned on and off the job.

The authors present a holistic approach to development, renewal, and leadership that provides powerful insights and incentives to individuals in every walk of life.

While some of the book does pertain to our roles as leaders in organizations, it definetly sketches a profile of how their principles apply to the whole person.

“Leaders are the stewards of organizational energy—in companies, organizations and even in families. They inspire or demoralize others first by how effectively they manage their own energy and next by how well they mobilize, focus, invest and renew the collective energy of those they lead. The skillful management of energy, individually and organizationally, makes possible something that we call ‘full engagement.”

Consider the opening paragraphs of this book.

“We live in digital time. Our rhythms are rushed, rapid fire and relentless, our days carved up into bits and bytes. We celebrate breadth rather than depth, quick reaction more than considered reflection. We skim across the surface, alighting for brief moments at dozens of destinations but rarely remaining for long at any one. We race through our lives without pausing to consider who we really want to be or where we really want to go. We’re wired up but we’re melting down.”

“Most of us are just trying to do the best that we can. When demand exceeds our capacity, we begin to make expedient choices that get us through our days and nights, but take a toll over time. We survive on too little sleep, wolf down fast foods on the run, fuel up with coffee and cool down with alcohol and sleeping pills. Faced with relentless demands at work, we become short-tempered and easily distracted. We return home from long days at work feeling exhausted and often experience our families not as a source of joy and renewal, but as one more demand in an already overburdened life.”

The authors, Loehr and Schwartz, developed a Corporate Athlete Training System based in 25 years of research with some the world’s greatest athletes to help them perform more effectively under brutal competitive pressures. They recommend the following principles:

Principle 1: Full engagement requires drawing on four separate but related sources of energy: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Principle 2: Because energy diminishes both with overuse and with underuse, we must balance energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal.

Principle 3: To build capacity we must push beyond our normal limits, training in the same systematic way that elite athletes do.

Principle 4: Positive energy rituals-highly specific routines for managing energy-are the key to full engagement and sustained high performance.Making change that lasts requires a 3-step process:

Define Purpose,

Face the Truth and

Take Action.

The authors describe the connectivity of the 4 sources of energy (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) in “The Mind and Body Are One”. Two key words are used, flexibility and resilience. Notice:

Physical strength, endurance, flexibility and resilience we readily grasp at the physical level, however these markers also are applicable to our mental, emotional, and spiritual capacity.

“Emotional flexibility reflects the capacity to move freely and appropriately along a wide spectrum of emotions rather than responding rigidly or defensively. Emotional resilience is the ability to bounce back from experiences of disappointment, frustration and even loss.

Mental endurance is a measure of the ability to sustain focus and concentration over time, while mental flexibility is marked by the capacity to move between the rational and the intuitive and to embrace multiple points of view.

Spiritual strength is reflected in the commitment to one’s deepest values, regardless of circumstance and even when adhering to them involves personal sacrifice. Spiritual flexibility, by contrast, reflects the tolerance for values and beliefs that are different than one’s own, so long as those values and beliefs don’t bring harm to others.

In short, to be fully engaged requires strength, endurance, flexibility and resilience in all dimensions.”

From their research the authors offer many cases examples to demonstrate that their approaches are factual and that they work. It’s a breakthrough discovery and could save careers and help transform organizations if their approach is followed.

I say “if” because, like any new regime, this approach will run into a set of corporate obstacles, principally the resistance of top management in finding and implementing these ideas. Some of what the authors advises, wise though it may be, will run right into the face of traditions in the workplace many are unwilling to change.

The authors plainly apply one of Aristotle his leading principles (in medio stat veritute, “virtue lies in the middle”), however, they show that balance is not static–a middle, dead zone–but is found by balancing one extreme (stress) against the other (recovery). That’s the key to full engagement.

Stress and recovery have to be done in balance (as with physical exercise) and it is necessary to plunge fully into both to get out of the dead zone in the middle. Most performance in today’s organizations is in this middle ground between rest and stress; but the high achievers stretch their capacity enough to let it bounce back stronger the next time after a reprieve. Most workers and managers don’t do either: they live and work in a zone of half-tired, half-dozing caused by our culture’s ignorance of–and hostility toward–managing energy naturally and effectively.

The back end of the book is devoted to “The Training System” which are chapters that guide the reader to take action and get results. Attitude, rituals, daily tasks, diet, vision, and purpose are analyzed and described. And a summary of the Corporate Athlete caps it off, including some useful charts.

For the American who lives in digital time, whose pace is rushed, rapid-fire, and relentless, facing crushing workloads, and who tries to cram as much as possible into every day so that who is wired up, but melting down, I recommend the reading of this book for the secret of full engagement and a healthful, happy and balanced life.

Useful Tips for Renovation After a Flood

1. Save your hardware on doors and cabinets. Also vent covers ect.

These can be cleaned and will save you a great deal of money. Door hardware can run you per door $20.00 plus. If you are matching any part of your kitchen or bath saving the door knobs can save you the hassle of trying to match as well as the money to buy new.

2. If you are matching cabinets to existing upper cabinets pay attention to the following details.

Profile of the door- I suggest saving a door so you can match color and style. You may not be able to match exactly if your cabinets are more than 2-3 years old so find the one with the closest outside edge detail that matches. The inside detail is less noticeable.

Color and finish of the cabinets.-Remember the finish may have faded with age and sun exposure. Just try to match the best you can.

Flush doors or recess doors- This is a big one. When possible take a picture of your cabinets. Look and see if the door goes all the way to the edge or is inset a bit. This can make a difference in the layout of your cabinets as well as the profile look. You want to make sure you choose a look that blends.

3. Choosing insulation-

When your house is flooded you need to replace the insulation. There are a couple of basic types of insulation- faced or unfaced. The thickness of insulation usually are R13 R19 R30.
Generally speaking you should have the insulation in the inside walls of the house( bathroom areas) unfaced so air can circulate. You would also use unfaced in a crawlspace under the floor. On all outside walls you would want to use faced iinsulation.
The type and thickness of insulation you use depends on the depth of the studs. For instance, with an inside wall 2 x 4 stud you would use R13. Outside walls or garages may be 2 x 6 which you can use R19 and crawl space beams are much deeper so you would use R30 or R19. R19 is used more for cooling and in colder areas and R30 is used more for heat retention in ceilings. The main things is to not use a thickness of insulation that you must cram in the space. This defeats the purpose and cuts off airflow.

4. Tile-

There are many different types of tile. A couple of things to keep in mind when choosing tile for your home or office. Ceramic tile is less expensive and can save you money but you want to use that only in areas that are not high traffic. Walls, small bathrooms are perfect for this type of tile. For high traffic areas you will want to use Porcelain, Slate or a solid stone or tile that can handle abrasion and traffic. Pay attention to the cleaning and maintenance of the tile or stone. Some material take more care than others.

5. Nuetralizing and testing your soil after a flood.

A flood can ravage a yard–floods can cover your yard in harmful bacteria and often times will damage a yard to the point that it must be reseeded. But lime can help you revive your yard. Lime can help to neutralize harmful bacteria in your yard, add needed calcium to the soil, and lower the acidity of the soil to optimal levels. The beneficial effects of lime can encourage your flood damaged grass to regrow or prepare your soil for reseeding.
If you want to have your soil tested for environmental safety call your local health department and they can guide you on how to have that done.

Things You’ll Need:
30- to 40-lb. bag of dolomitic lime per 5000sqft
Soil pH tester
drop spreader
rake
water and hose
Step 1

Use a water hose to rinse away the sediment, left behind from the flood waters, from your flood-damaged yard. Lightly rake the yard to remove any metal, plastic or other foreign items left from the flood.

Step 2
Take an assessment of your grass to determine if it is healthy enough to be saved. If the lawn has sustained minimal damage–the grass retains much of its green color and the root structure is intact–purchase some dolomitic lime from a local hardware store to disinfect the lawn. The calcium in the lime will also nourish the damaged grass. It is advisable to till and reseed a lawn that has been waterlogged or sediment covered for longer than four days.

Step 3
Use a soil pH tester to check the acidity of the soil in your yard before reseeding. Set the switch on the tester to the “pH” position, and then stick the probes on the bottom of the tester into your soil. Read the tester’s pH meter to find out the level of acid present in your soil. Test several other spots in your yard to get an idea of how acidic your soil is. This will indicate how much lime you need.

Step 4
Place the lime into a drop spreader and then distribute the lime evenly across your lawn. Use one 30- to 40-lb. bag of lime for every 2,500-3,5000 square feet of yard space. If your yard’s pH is just barely outside of the optimal level of acidity for the type of grass you will grow, use less lime–try using one bag for every 3,500 to 4,500 square feet of yard space.

Step 5
Work the lime into the soil with a garden rake. For lawns that are too damaged to revive, use a shovel and garden rake to mix the lime about half a foot down into your yard. Reseed and or fertilize the lawn two weeks after you’ve mixed the lime into your soil.

6. Water Restoration Versus Mold Certification- Do you need to do either or both?

Water Restoration Companies offer a number of services. You can have them totally strip your walls, floors, wipe down and spray areas with antimicrobial solution to prevent mold, kill existing mold ect.
They can also test moisture in the floor and walls to determine when you are dry enough to rebuild and if certain items are safe to keep. They are the experts.

Most companies will allow you to use as much of their services as you want. Although you can do alot of the services yourself, keep in mind that most licensed bonded companies keep up with the latest codes and effective solutions. It is their business to make sure you are safe. Water restoration companies can NOT provide you with a certificate, however, keeping your records of what was treated with your home documents can make a world of difference in resale. Also water restoration prepares you to be able to pass Indoor Air quality tests to receive a letter of acceptable air quality after a disaster.

If you choose to have someone restore your home, make sure they are Licensed and Bonded.

There really isn’t anything that is a “mold certificate”. What you CAN receive and want to obtain is essentially a letter stating that at a certain date after the disaster that the indoor air quality was tested and was at acceptable levels. Companies such as B4 out of Lavernge TN specialize in that field. They can come out and test the levels of mold as well as look for visible mold. After testing if results are not acceptable they will offer solutions to fix the problem. If levels are acceptable you will receive a letter showing the test results, date and acceptable levels of indoor air quality approval. Keep this with your house documents for resale.

Make sure that whatever “Testing” company you use is certified and licensed for the specific area you are testing for. Check to make sure they are using government certified and approved technology and are certified to use the equipment. It is also advisable to use a different company for restoration than you are using for testing. This gives credibility and provides more reliable results.

After a flood another important element to check for is RADON. Most people focus on mold, but often overlook Radon testing. Radon is a radioactive gaseous element produced in the disintegration of radium, a radioactive metallic element. It cannot be detected by the senses and can be confirmed only by sophisticated instruments and laboratory tests. The gas enters a house through pores and cracks in the concrete or through floorboards of poorly ventilated crawlspaces, especially when wet ground allows the gas to escape easily through the soil and disperse in the atmosphere. Radon is a lung carcinogen: the National Academy of Sciences estimates radon causes some 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths annually.A certified indoor air quality testing and approval letter runs about $300.00. Radon testing runs about $150.00.

There are 2 times you can test for mold; before you rebuild and after complete renovation. If you wait until after renovation the test will be an “indoor air quality” test. You will run your Fan on your AC for 3 straight days to bring out any lingering mold spores, other carcinogens and toxins. After you run for 3 days change your filter as the air during that 3 days is not an accurate read of the quality and can be very toxic . Once you have done the above you are ready for testing. The test will give you detailed information about what is in your air and if it meets Government Health acceptable levels.

I would strongly suggest the water restoration as well as the testing, especially if you have any intention of selling your home, or have someone with a low immune system or allergies.

7.Information about Central Air Units after a flood

First thing you need to consider related to your Central air unit after a flood is how far under was the unit sumerged. Were any parts of the electrical or motor under water? If so you may want to consider replacing your unit. Sometimes the unit can be fixed saving money. However, proceed with caution. After a flood manufacturers will void any warranty of the unit and parts. So you may fix it temporarily only to find out later that something else breaks and not only are the parts not covered but any work done on the unit after the flood is not warrantied as well, including labor.

If your duct work was underwater it is imperative that you replace it. Otherwise, you will be blowing in mold spores and other toxins in to your breathing air, causing extreme sickness.
Even if your unit works, if it was sumerge and your duct work was underwater, DO NOT turn on your HVAC. You are inviting all the toxic elements into a sealed space( your home).

If you have a crawl space that was flooded, make sure that all duct work is removed, all plastic, and insulation are removed and replaced. Clean the area completely including all beams and treat with an antimicrobial solution.Dry out with fans. You do not want to have any standing water.

Special Design note. A special note for Split HVAC units or upstairs units. When a house is orginally built all the piping is run on the inside of the house behind any brick or siding. However, when you purchase a new unit you can not get to those pipes to replace them. Therefore, new pipes must run on the outside of the house. This is not attractive. You can however request a cover that blends in with your vinyl, wood of brick to minimize the appearance. Talk to your HVAC contractor and they can explain your options.

Choosing an Central Air Unit.
Some of this information provided by http://www.furnacecompare.com/buying_central_ac.html

Buying a Central Air Conditioner
Factors to consider:

1.Are you paying a reasonable price for your central a/c?
2.What capacity of central air conditioner should you buy?
3.Should you buy a high, middle, or low-efficiency air conditioner?

Are you paying a reasonable price for your Central Air Conditioner?
There are essentially two costs when purchasing and installing a new central air conditioner: equipment costs and labor costs. Don’t be surprised to pay $3,500 plus( 2000sqft home) in cost to install new ductwork and a new HVAC unit. The installation can take several days and requires a great deal of detail.Beware of prices too low as well as prices too high.

As with installing a furnace or boiler, you will need to work with a good HVAC contractor when you install a new central air conditioning system. Make sure that you get quotes from at least three contractors. This will ensure you a low, medium and high bid, and give you a good sense of what it is reasonable to pay. Also, make sure to screen your potential contractors to ensure that they have happy customers and no complaints. Always choose a licensed bonded contractor!

Choosing the right size Central Air Conditioner
As with sizing furnaces or boilers, it is important to have an HVAC Contractor perform a load calculation before you decide which size air conditioning system to buy. If you install an air conditioner which is too large, it will cycle on and off too often, substantially reducing the efficiency of the system. Too small, and your air conditioner may not be able to meet the demands of a hot, humid day.

Dont’ assume that previous owners or the builder did this calculation. Builders will use the least expensive unit that meets specifications. So it may not be the best size or the most energy effiecient for the space.

The industry standard load calculation is called the Manual J calculation. It takes into account the size of your house, the amount of insulation installed, the square footage, and a host of other factors.

Central Air Conditioner Efficiency
The most common measure of the efficiency of a consumer central air conditioning system is the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). Beginning in 2006, an air conditioner must have a SEER of at least 13 to be sold in the United States. Higher efficiency models have a SEER between 14 and 22.

A more common rating method for commercial air conditioners is the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio). EER is a measure of the ratio of the amount of cooling (measured in BTUs) to the amount of electricity it consumes (measured in watt-hours). The EER is a steady state measure — that is, the efficiency is only measured once the unit has started up and is running at a steady capacity. SEER takes into account the startup and shutdown time as well, making it a more accurate measurement for determining the actual energy costs for the end user.

Currently until Dec. 31st 2010 There is a tax credit up to $1,500.00 if you purchase a high energy efficient HVAC unit. This is definetly worth considering if you plan to stay in your home for more than 3 years.

8. Recyling and GREEN Tips for Rebuilding

It is a little hard personally to think about recyling and environmental issues in a time of crisis, however, if you have noticed the temporary landfills you can’t help but think about it.

Here are a few things you can do to help.
1. Keep a separate bag for all the cans and water bottles that workers and your family use so you can take to a recyling station near you.
2. Tear down and keep any cardboard from new appliances, or anything new that you purchase. You would be amazed at the amount of cardboard that can be recyled.
3. Make sure that any appliances that you are getting rid of are disposed of properly. Contact your local metro works department if you have questions about hazardous materials or what needs to be disposed of in a special way.
4. When purchasing new furniture look for items that have eco friendly foam and fabric. These will biodegrade over time in a landfill leaving no trace. Some manufacturers of furniture also use UV technology to cure their wood. Whenever, it can make sense in your budget, choosing GREEN products can make a huge difference.Ask about their Sustainability statements if they are not already posted.
5. Check out different flooring options. Upgrade to GREEN carpet padding. It is a little more expensive but is a better padding and is biodegradeable. So if you can afford just a little more, this is a wise choice. Check the manufacturing practices of flooring manufacturing and make GREEN choices whenever you can. Ask about low emmissions during manufacturing. Also when looking at wood flooring products consider bamboo or recyled wood products.

Just doing any of the above will help our environment. So when rebuilding try to think GREEN.

9. Paint tips
When remodeling one of the givens is new paint. This is an area where you can do it yourself and save a great deal of money. Here are just a few tips to help insure you are satisfied with your paint job.

1.With new drywall make sure you choose new dywall primer and prime and prepare the area properly for your new paint. You may want to lightly wipe off any drywall dust before you prime.
2.If you are trying out a new color or paint I suggest getting a sample can and doing a test area first. Most stores have these for about $3.00 each and it covers about 4′ x 4′ of wall. You can then see how the color is afffected by natural and artificial light and how it really looks in a larger space and in your space. This can save you a lot of time and money. Better safe than sorry.
3. Choose good quality paint. You may think you are saving money by going with a less expensive paint, but in essence the less expensive brands may take 2-3 coats where the good quality paints will only need 1-2. This saves not only time but money because you need less paint. This also makes a huge difference in appearance and how even the paint spreads.
4. Some paints will have built in tinted primer or you can get primer that is tinted the color of your paint. This means it will take less coats to get the color you want. This is strongly recommended for darker colors as they are difficult to get an even appearance.
5. Don’t take shortcuts in preparation. Use painters tape to protect areas you do not want painted. I prefer a blue tape so I can see just where things are taped and how much paint I get on it.Make sure you have the correct tools on hand before you start. Invest in a good roller, edging brush and any other triming and edging items you think you might need. Make sure you choose the right roller sponge depth for your task. Ask a professional on what is the best nap for your roller for what you are painting. Generally, a 3/8″ is a good depth for most general painting.
6. Paints can be done in several different sheens: Flat, Eggshell/Sateen, Semi gloss, High Gloss.
Most builders use Flat paint because it is less expensive because it covers more area. It is also harder to see imperfections in the drywall. However, flat paint is hard to wipe off and clean making it look dirty really fast. I do not recommend Flat paint.

Eggshell or Sateen is great for most areas. It is easier to clean and still covers very well. It also is almost as affective at hiding imperfections as the flat paint.

Semi Gloss is great in high traffic areas or kitchens. It is VERY easy to clean. It will however, have a shine about it and shows imperfections in the walls.

High Gloss is usually reserved for trim and doors. It is very easy to clean with a little water and a rag. It may also be used on cabinets in a kitchen or bath room.
7. Oil or Latex paint. When possible choose a water based Latex paint. This is easier to clean off and better for the environment. Alot of older buildings however have oil paint.Make sure you know what type of paint is on the walls before you paint. You do not want to waste your time putting Latex over oil. It will peal right off. If you want to move from an oil paint to a Latex paint, sand the surface and prime before painting. Failure to do this will yield undesirable results.
8.It is almost certian that you will have to do some minor or major touch up later. When that time comes you want to be able to match the paint. After you are done painting you want to make sure you have a record of what paint you used and where. It is a good idea to either copy down the mixture information off the paint can label and note what room it is for, or you can always take a picture with your cell phone of the top of the paint can with the information and send to your email with the name of the room in the subject line. Having a picture also gives you the color on the paint can top making it easier to recognize.
9.Paint is usually only good for about 1 year after opening so you don’t want to keep it much longer past a year. It will not coat evenly. To dispose of used paint you can take the top off and let it dry out. When it is dry most trash collectors will pick up. However, check with Metro Works on how your area disposes of hazardous products. NEVER throw away cans filled with wet paint in to the trash. Protect our environment and make sure things are disposed of correctly.
Happy Painting!

So you have finished your renovation or construction and chosen the perfect furniture for your office or home, and you step back to admire the work.

Then it hits you! Something is missing. Artwork!

Everyone knows that art is the ultimate accessory, but what style do you use and where do you look to find that perfect piece? Well wonder no more. Here is a look at some of the styles of art and a few of my favorite Nashville artists that can WOW you with their talent without you having to take out a loan to afford their fabulous artwork.

Artists use many styles in their paintings and drawings. Here are some of the more common styles of art.

Abstract- This is a type of art where the art itself doesn’t have to make sense or be recognizable things that appear in the real world . People can look at abstract art and see various different things. It is generally not specific objects but rather shapes and color that give this artwork its magnificent flare and affect on emotions.

Famous abstract artists you may recognize are Sonia Delaunay and Jackson Pollack

Cubism- This is modern art made up mostly of paintings. The paintings generally use geometric shapes to express the nature of the artwork. This is not a realistic view of a particular thing or person but rather a view of the object or person by using shapes. In most cubism paintings you can recognize the object being portrayed even if it isn’t a true realistic view.

Famous cubism artists are Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

Expressionism- In expressionism art, the artist is most interested in expressing a particular feeling or emotion through the painting. They may use bright colors to express happiness, or dark colors to express a sad mood. The texture and type of medium that is used can also provoke an emotional response. It is all about feeling and expressing ones emotions on a subject.

Famous expressionist artists include, Marc Chagall and Ludwig Kirchner.

Fauvism- Fauvism was a style that lasted only about 4 years starting in 1905. The movement was led by Henry Matisse. Subject matters where painted very simply but using bold and bright colors and contrasts in patterns. This style was named after the French word Fauvism meaning ”Wild Beast”. This name was appropriate because of the intense colors and patterns used.

The most famous fauvism artist was the leader of the movement Henry Matisse.

Impressionism- Impressionism began in France in the late 19th century and early 20th century. These paintings look as though the artist only glanced at the subject he or she is painting. The paintings do not offer much detail. Generally, they are of outdoor scenes such as landscapes and buildings. Bold colors with a shimmering appearance make these paintings extremely intriguing to look at.

Famous impressionist artists you are sure to recognize are Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir. This is one of my favorite art styles.

Pointillism-This is an amazing style. The artist uses points and quick brush strokes that when seen from a distance create an image. The dots blend together to make incredible colors that create detailed shadows and depth of picture.

Famous pointillism artist are Paul Seurat and Paul Signac.

Pop Art-Pop art is art that takes everyday items and paints them in a brash and colorful way. This art is inspired by advertising, comic strips and popular entertainment. It is short for “popular art”.

An example of a famous pop artist would be Andy Warhol.

Post Impressionism- This style began in the 19th century. It consists of mainly still lifes and landscapes. The style is full of varying shades of colors and shadows.

The name Vincent Van Gogh sound familiar? He is the most famous post impressionist artist.

Primitivism-This style of art looks as though it is done by a child. It is very simple. The artwork is usually 2 dimensional and has a very flat appearance with little to no depth.

Henry Matisse and Paul Klee did many pieces of art in this style.

Realism- Realism is a type of art that shows things exactly as they appear in real life. It began in the 18th century and continued into the 19th century. Most realist were French but this was also popular among some American artists.

Some famous realism artists are Leonardo de Vinci, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec and Daumier Thomas Eakins

Surrealism-Surrealistic art is made to look dreamlike. The artist uses familiar objects but in a different and mysterious way than you might normally expect. It is used to evoke emotion, while striving to enlighten its audience to a new or different way of looking at things.

Two famous surrealism artists are Salvador Dali and Henry Rousseau.

So now that you know a little bit about the different styles of art ,the next time you look at a piece of artwork think about the influence and style of the piece.

To complete your home or office with fabulous affordable art. Check out some of my favorite Nashville Artists.

Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5th, 1862.

The French, Spanish and English troops landed in Mexico 5 months earlier with the intention of collecting Mexican debt from the new democratic government under the presidential rule of Benito Juarez an Indian. The Spanish and English Troops collected their debts and left the country. However, the French under the rule of Emperor Napoleon III had other intentions and did not leave.

Emperor Napoleon III brought over a Hapsburg prince, Maximilian,to rule the new Mexico. The French had not been defeated in over 50 years and proved not to be afraid of anyone. Since the United States was involved in its own civil war they did not pose a threat to Napoleon and the French army.

The French, armed with the finest modern war equipment, left from the Port of Vera Cruz and set out to destroy Mexico City. The French believed that if they conquered Mexico City that the rest of the country would surrender.

Texas native General Zaragosa ordered Colonel Diaz and his cavalry( considered the best in the world) to attack the French. The French in turn sent their men to chase Diaz. The French were destroyed by the superior cavalry. The remaining French soldiers charged the Mexican defenders through terrible rain and storms to face charging cattle and Indians armed with machetes. When the battle was over many French were killed or badly wounded and those left were being pursued by Diaz and his superb cavalry.

The Mexicans had WON a great victory!

That victory, kept Napoleon III from supplying the Confederate army with weapons for almost a year. This allowed the Union Soldiers to build up their army, which then allowed them to win the battle of Gettysburg just 14 months later, essentially ending the Civil War.

Once the Civil War was ended,Union forces were then rushed to the Texan/Mexican boarder by lead of General Sheridan who supplied the Mexicans with all the weapons and ammunition it needed to fight the French. American soldiers were discharged of their uniforms and riffles if they would join the Mexican army to fight the French. Mexican and American side by side defeated the French. The American League of Honor march in victory along with the Mexican Army in a Victory parade in Mexico City.

In gratitude, thousands of Mexicans crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U. S. Armed Forces. Still today Mexicans remember the loyalty and help from the Americans during that war in 1862 and are willing to help America fight for its freedom at the possible cost of their own lives.

That is why “Cinco de Mayo” is such a celebration! It is a celebration about liberty and freedom. It is about two countries fighting side by side together since May 5th, 1862 to preserve the rights and freedoms both countries hold so dear.

Celebrate and remember your friends! Viva, el Cinco de Mayo!

So is a successful interior environment. One detail that is often an after thought is interior signage. Yet it is this detail that can enhance or hurt an experience for your patron or customer.

Here are some helpful planning tips to get you started that will provide not only a functional way finding environment but one that is aesthetically pleasing as well.

Where do I need signage?

Below is a list of some basic Interior Signage and locations

Directories- look for a product that is available in a full range of lens configurations as well as one that can accommodate a printed insert enabling the system to be updated as necessary

Locations:

Lobbies

Elevator exits

Stairwell exits

Floor Directional- Look at products that have inserts that can be updated easily.

Locations:

Corridor intersections

Elevator exits

Stairwell exits

Overheads-

Types: wall mount, flush ceiling mount, or suspended

Locations:

Lobbies

Corridors

High traffic areas impeding visibility of wall signage

Evacuation Maps- Make sure the signage is in accordance with local code. Maps need to have a changeable insert.

Locations:

Elevator exits

Stairwell exits

Hotel Rooms

Classrooms

Conference Rooms

Locations:

Conference rooms

Meeting rooms

Office/Suite/Room Identification- Check ADA guidelines and Braille capabilities. Look for non-glare and clean flush appearances.

Locations:

Offices

Hospital/Assisted Living/
Patient Rooms

Hotel Rooms

K-12 and University classrooms

Other areas where signage must accommodate change.

Misc. room Identification- Look for ADA complaint and Braille requirements. May want multiple lines of text option.

Locations:

Restrooms

Stairwells

Any secondary (non-office) room

Common Areas

Workstation Nameplates- Look for inserts that can easily be updated. Various mounting option may include tape, pin, magnet, Velcro and under-cap attachment.

Locations:

Workstations

Open office environments

Flag Mounts- Flag mounts are double sided and typically oriented horizontally, however, they may be mounted vertically as well. Both orientations are perpendicular to the wall.

Locations:

Lobbies

Vestibules

Corridors

High traffic areas impeding visibility of wall signage

Locations:

Interior stairwells

Does my business need ADA compliant signage? If so what are the ADA regulations for signage?

When passing by a person you don’t know, it is not typical to say Hola (oh-lah), as you may say “Hi” in the U.S. Most of the time you are going to want to greet strangers with a more formal greeting of Buenos dias(bway-nohs dee-ahs), Buenas tardes(bway-nohs tahr-dehs), or Buenas noches(bway-nohs noh-ches). You may also say Buenos or Buenas for short.

Here are some typical greetings you may use.

Hello or Hi Hola (oh-lah)

Good Morning Buenos dias (Bway-nohs dee-ahs)

Good afternoon Buenas tardes (bway-nohs tar-dehs)

Good Evening Buenas noches (bway-nahs no-chehs)

How’s it going? ¿Como` te va? (Koh-moh tay vah?)

What’s happening? ¿Que` pasa? (Kay pah-sah?)

What’s going on?

You may also notice that we use bueno and buena. This has to do with the gender of the word it precedes. Ex: dias is masculine and tardes and noches are feminine. You use an o with masculine and an a with a feminine word.
